This was Arie Luyendyk's second Indianapolis 500 win, and the first for a normally aspirated engine since 1967. Arie beat teamate Scott Goodyear in a controversial finish. Tony Stewart had brushed the wall causing the yellow flag to come out with two laps to go. This meant the race would - or should - finish under the yellow. But to everyone’s surprise - including Luyendyk and Goodyear - the green flag came out for the last lap. The situation was further confused by the fact that the yellow lights around the track did not change to green until the leaders were approaching turn three. This was the first time teamates captured the top two spots since 1962.
