After winning in 1986, Al Holbert returned to Daytona as team manager for his Lowenbrau Porsche 962 team. He assembled drivers Derek Bell, Chip Robinson, and AL Unser Jr. and added himself as a forth driver as a precaution.

As the green flag flew on Saturday 3:34 pm the Bayside Porsche took the early lead. Problems hobbled many of the front runners in the first quarter of the race.

As attrition thinned the ranks, a battle shaped up between the Foyt and Holbert team. The Foyt team had a slight edge in horsepower, running the 3.0-liter engine compared to Holbert's 2.8-liter, but the Lowenbrau special was dominant in the infield sections of the circuit.

Sunday morning, Holbert's Porsche was running perfectly. They had lost the drivers side window, however, which caused hot air to blow into the car, and the drivers were exhausted by the heat. Always prepared, Holbert didn't have to look far for his helmet. With Unser struggling, and Foyt gaining ground, Holbert decided to take a turn at the wheel. He didn't have a choice, because Robinson and Bell were still recovering from their last driving shifts.

After Al Holbert got in the car he did a magnificent job, keeping the car in front of the Foyt team. Holbert would eventually wear out too and the team asked Bell to get in the car one last time. Bell would drive the last stint, battling cramping and heat exhaustion and brought the Lowenbrau special across the finish line, completing 753 laps - 2,680 miles at an average speed of 11.499 mph.
