In 1984 team Joest ended the Porsche factory team's three year string of winning Le Mans with a decisive victory.

Returning in 1985 with a similar livery and again with Klaus Ludwig (this time teamed with Paolo Barilla and "John Winter"), the race produced a second consecutive win for Team Joest, Klaus Ludwig and chassis 956B-117.
