By 1978 the Porsche 935 was a dominant force in the Group 5 category of endurance racing. Porsche debuted their 935-79 - affectionately known as Moby Dick due to the large whale tail-like rear of the car. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass dominated the Silverstone 6 Hour race in it's debut, smashing the lap record by 5 seconds and leading every lap of the race. At Le Mans, the car was fast, but mechanical gremlins relegated it to 8th place. The car was entered in two more races. At Vallelumga and it looked like it would be a repeat of Silverstone, only break down with 10 minutes to go and in it's final race at the Norisring, break failure did the car in. The car was then sent to the Porsche Musuem and it's career was over.
