The 1993 Indianapolis 500 was one of the most competitive on record. Any number of drivers had a great chance to win, including veteran Mario Andretti and "rookie", defening F1 champion Nigel Mansel. In the closing stages of the race Mansell was leading on a late race restart, but his inexperience on high-speed ovals got the best of him and he was passed on the restart by Arie Luyendyk and Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi then went on to pass Luyendyk and take his second Indy 500 victory.
