For the 1983 CART Indycar season, veteran Johnny Rutherford was set to sign with Forsythe racing to drive the Skoal Bandit 83 March. However, Bobby Unser, who was going to come out of retirement driving for Patrick Racing, abruptly re-retired after a testing accident. Johnny got a call from Pat Patrick and signed with them instead. It would be a fateful move. Rutherford crashed the ill-tempered 83 Patrick Wildcat in practice at Indy and missed the 500. His replacement at Forsythe racing - F1 driver Teo Fabi - had better fortunes, breaking the track record at Indy en route to the pole position. Fabi completed the thirteen race season with six pole positions and four wins (including the Pocono 500) en route to an overall second place finish in the season Championship.
