1977 was a historic year at Indianapolis for several reasons. Tom Sneva became the first driver to turn a lap at 200mph. Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify for the 500, and of course A. J. Foyt, became the first four time winner.

Gordon Johncock dominated the race and with about 16 laps to go he had a safe lead on Foyt when his engine gave out. Gordy coasted to a stop in the first turn, got out of his car and cooled himself off in the creek that runs through the turn one infield, then saluted A.J. as he drove on to victory.
