For most of the 1975 Indianapolis 500 it looked like Wally Dallenbach was going to walk away with it as he lead at will for nearly 100 laps from lap 59 through 161. His car didn't last however and it came down to a battle between defending champ Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Unser and AJ Foyt. Ruthford pitted on lap 164 giving the lead to Unser. On lap 171 light rain started falling and both Unser and Rutherford made a quick splash and go stop. Three laps later the skies opened up drenching the track in torrential rain. Unser slowly led Rutherford to the red and checkered flag to take the race win. By the time Unser got to victory lane the rain had already started to let up and minutes later it stopped altogether.
