When the teams arrived at Indianapolis in May of 1972, there were new rules that allowed larger rear wings than had been seen before. McLaren and Dan Gurney's All American Racers took full advantage and developed cars that gnerated lap speeds that approached 200mph. Going into qualifying the track record was 178.696mph. For the only time in history, two ten mph barriers were broken in one day. Bill Vukovich Jr. broke the 180mph barrier with a lap of 185.797, but crashed on his secnod lap. Bobby Unser broke the 190mph barrier with laps of 194.932, then 196.036, and finally 196.678 - Unser had raised the 1971 track record by 17mph! Surely something that will never be seen again.
