Floyd Roberts led most of the second half of the 1938 Indianapolis 500 and scored an easy 3 lap victory over previous year's winner Wilbur Shaw. In 1939, driving the same car, rebadged with the number 1, Roberts was killed during the 500. In a twist of irony, he started - and finished - the 1939 race in position 23; his winning car number from the previous year. This was also the same car that took the life of 1946 winner George Robson in September of 1946.
