Fernando Alonso shocked the racing world in 2017 when he and his McLaren F1 team announced that Alonso would skip the Monaco Grand Prix to compete - with Team McLaren Honda - in the 101st Indianapoilis 500. He did not disappoint as he was competitive all month, qualified fifth, and lead 27 laps (3rd most) on race day, before engine failure ended his day with 20 laps to go. Fernando was named 2017 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year.
