The 1981 Formula One season came down to the last race of the year at Las Vegas. Williams driver Carlos Reutemann had a 1 point lead over Nelson Piquet - all he had to do was finish ahead of Piquet to win the Championship. But the desert heat and counterlockwise direction of the track took it's toll on drivers. Piquet struggled greatly throughout the weekend and during the race. Reutemann had his own problems with his car sticking in fourth gear and relegating him to eight place. A visibly struggling Piquet managed to bring home his car in 5th place, scoring 2 points - just enough to take the World Championship by a single point over Reutemann who scored zero points in the race.
