After winning the final race of the 1.5 litre engine formula in 1965, Honda missed most of the 1966 season which ushered in the 3 litre era. The RA273 made it's debut at the 1966 Italian Grand Prix where Richie Ginther qualified an impressive 7th in the heavy car. Ginther was joined by Ronnie Bucknum for the last two races in the United States and Mexico, where Ginther scored a fourth place finish. For 1967 Honda retained the services of 1964 World Champion John Surtees who ran in nine of the eleven races. In the five races Surtees finished, he was always in the top six and scored a win at the Italian Grand Prix (in the RA300).
