The 1996 season got off to a rough start for driver Buddy Lazier. After dropping out of the first race of the year, Buddy broke his back practicing for the second race at Phoenix and sat out that race. Arriving at Indy with a back x-ray described as looking like 'scrambled eggs', Buddy qualified a solid fifth on the grid and during the race led on four occasions - the last coming as he chased down and passed leader Davy Jones with only seven laps remaining to score a dramatic win. The pain from his back was clearly evident in victory lane, but no doubt the victory was a good dose of medicine!
