only check Indycals

1984 marked Gordon Johncock's 20th consecutive start in the Indianapolis 500. While showing more competitiveness than in 1983, Gordy's fortunes still didn't come close to matching his spectacular win in 1982. Mechanical problems with his Patrick Racing entered March put him down a couple of laps, and just past the half way point he wrecked coming out of turn four before careening into the pits with a stuck throttle and nearly hitting a sign board man for Chris Kneifel. Johncock ended up with a broken ankle. The following year he would return to Indy, but abruptly retired just before pole qualifying. Johncock would come back in 1987, and run sporadically before finally retiring after the 1992 race.
