At the 1984 Indianapolis 500, it looked like Al Unser Jr. might avoid the Sophmore Jinx. Al ran steadily with the leaders, running as high as second place for a number of laps. Any chance of victory was thwarted at lap 131 when his water pump gave out, ending his day. Unser would score a win at Portland and finished sixth in the season point standings.
