Mario Andretti had the fastest car at Indy in 1976 and looked primed to get his second win in the 500. However, Mario had formula one commitments on the first weekend of qualifying and had no chance to win the pole position. He did, howver, beat Johnny Rutherford's pole speed when he qualified on the third day of qualifying. The fastest car in the field would start 19th. Mario charged from 19th to 7th in only TWO LAPS! His first pit-stop, however, was an un-Penske-like disaster when the crew had problems changing a tire. His 44 second stop cost him any shot at victory (compounded by a 33 second stop his second time in) and when the race was red-flagged (and ended) at 102 laps Mario had worked his way back up to 8th place, one lap down.
