Parnelli Jones won the 1963 race, driving for flamboyant car owner JC Agajanian, in dominant, but controversial fashion amidst complaints that his car was leaking oil late in the race. The oil contributed to a few late race spins and prevented runner up Jim Clark - driving a rear engined Lotus - from making a serious attempt at catching Parnelli in the closing stages of the race. Two years later would see another Jones/Clark one-two finish, but with Clark coming out on top.
