Art Cross started the 1955 Indianapolis 500 in 24th position, but was a front runner in the second half of the race battling with Don Freeland and eventual winner Bob Sweiker. Cross led the race from laps 133-156 and eventually dropped out on lap 168 with mechanical problems.
