After dominating the 1970s, 1979 was the last world championship season for Ferrari for over 20 years. Both drivers – Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter – each won three races.

During the French Grand Prix, while Jean Pierre Jabouille went on to win the race in the Renaul RS10, all attention was focused on the battle for second – a truly epic fight between Jabouille’s team mate René Arnoux and Villeneuve. For the last three laps the two drivers fought wheel to wheel, passing and repassing each other, frequently banging tires.

To this day that battle is regarded as some of the most exciting laps in F1 history. Arnoux has since been quoted as saying “The duel with Gilles is something I will never forget. You can only race like that with someone you trust completely. It was the greatest race ever, and could only have happened between the two of us. …He beat me, yes, and in France… but it didn't worry me. I knew I'd been beaten by the best driver in the world."
