By the end of the 80s, the Porsche dominance at Le Mans no longer had a stranglehold on the 24 hour race. Following a win by Jaguar in 1988, Sauber Mercedes took top honors in 1989, finishing 1st, 2nd and 5th, and a safe race that was the last year the Mulsanne straight was free of chicanes. The Top 10 was a solid mix of Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar and Mazda.
