By 1978 Porsche was the dominant force at LeMans, scoring wins in 1970, 71 ,76 and 77 and it looked like it would continue into 1978 as Jacky Ickx put the number 6 Martini Porsche 936 on pole. But an equally determined Renault was ready for the fight. Both companies brought four cars and thieir combined 8 entries took up the first four rows. However, it was not to be Porsche's day as the Renault took it's first victory at LeMans and the number 6 came home second.
