Tony Stewart looked to be a strong threat to win the 1998 Indianapolis 500. The defending series champion qualified a solid fourth and had moved to the lead on lap 21... and on lap 22 his engine blew, relegating him to 33rd place. Tony did manage to win the season opening race at Walt Disney World Speedway, and again at New Hampshire International Speedway, but was unable to repeat as series champion, finishing third in the standings.
