1997 brought new cars and new engines to the Indianapolis 500. G Force and Dallara while Oldsmobile and Nissan supplied new, normally aspirated V8 engines. Regardless of the final outcome, it would be the first time a normally aspirated engine would win Indy since 1967. John Menard no longer had the speed advantage of his Buick V6 Turbo engines, but he still put together a powerhouse team with Tony Stewart and Robbie Buhl. Stewart woudl win at Pikes Peak International Raceway, while Buhl would win at New Hampshire. Stewart won the 1996-97 Indy Racing League Series Title.
