The 1992 Quaker State Buick was the car to beat at Indianapolis in May of 1992. Roberto Guerrero and Jim Crawford were regularly at the top of the speed charts during the month, both going over the 230 mph mark, which at that time had not been broken at Indy. On pole day Crawford blew an engine which put a damper on his hopes for the pole. Arie Luyendyk set a track record of 229.127mph, the Gary Bettenhausen upped it to 229.317. Guerrero went out at just after 5:30 and set three consecutive 1 lap track records, all over 232mph and averaged over 232mph to win the pole position. Jim Crawford would be a second day qualifier, but ended up with the 6th overall fastest time at just under 229mph.

Race day, however, was a nightmare for Guerrero. Cold temeperatures would play havoc on the day and Guerrero was the first victim crashing out on the second parade lap – the fastest car ever at Indy up to that point never even took the green flag.
