After retiring from Indycar racing in 1985, Gordon Johncock came out of retirement in 1987 to give Indianapolis another go. Over the next five years Johncock would focus on Indy and occasionally Michigan and Pocono. Unfortunately the 1989 500 was a short day for Gordy and he only finished 31st, but he would score an impressive 6th place finish in the 1991 500, while battling the flu.
