The 1988 Indianapolis 500 saw total domination by the Penske Racing Team. Capturing the front row, with Rick Mears on pole, Danny Sullivan in second and defending champion Al Unser Sr in third, all three cars combined to lead 192 of the 200 laps. Miller driver Danny Sullivan dominated the first half of the race, and even lapped team mate and pole sitter Rick Mears before a front wing came loose causing him to crash into the first turn wall. Unser led mid race, with Rick Mears taking control in the last half of the race and going on to the win.
