After winning the CART PPG Indycar World Series Championship in 1986 driving the March 86C, the Truesports team switched over to the Lola chassis for 1987. Bobby Rahal won three races, plus the non-points paying Marlboro Challenge en route to his second consecutive championship. With the Cosworth engine showing it’s age and being beaten fairly regularly by the new Chevrolet Indy engine, the team switched to the Judd engine for 1988. Successes were fewer and far between, but Rahal did manage to win the Pocono 500 – the only win the Judd engine would ever get.
