1987 saw Mario Andretti's Newman Haas Lola powered by the new Chevy V-8 Indy engine and for the first 177 laps of the race it looked like it would pay off big. Up to that point, Andretti lead at will, leading 170 of those laps, and having a full lap lead when his car died on lap 178.
Since the rules at Indy changed in 1979 to allow the field to bunch up under the yellow, no car before or since has dominated the 500 like Mario did. Juan Montoya came closest in 2000 leading 167 out of 200 laps. Had Mario made it to the end, he would have led 193 out of 200 laps!
