1986 was a breakout year for Michael Andretti – he scored his first career win, doing so on the challenging streets of Long Beach. He lead the first 42 laps at the Indy 500, won the next race at Milwaukee and then finished second to his dad (on Father’s Day) at Portland when his car ran out of fuel on the last turn while leading. It was the closest Indy car finish to that date. Michael would score one more win at the second Phoenix race and finish second in the CART PPG World Series point standings.
