1984 was a banner year for defending Indianapolis 500 winner Tom Sneva. At Indy, Sneva became the first driver to break the 210mph barrier during his pole run. In the race he proved to be the biggest competition to eventual winner Rick Mears before being sidelined with a CV joint failure. At Michigan, Snevea practiced without a rear wing! But he opted to race with the wing and put on an incredible battle with eventual winner Mario Andretti where the two cars ran side by side during the closing laps - something not seen previously in Indycar racing. Sneva would go on to win the final race at Las Vegas only to barely lose the national championship to Mario Andretti.
