Dubbed "the Yellow Submarine" the Pennzoil Chaparral and it's new driver Johnny Rutherford had a dominant season, winning both the Indy 500 and the CART Championship. The first purpose-built ground effects car, designed by noted McLaren and Ferrari F1 designer John Barnard, it made it's debut in 1979 in the hands of Al Unser who easily dominated the Indy 500 before mechanical failure sidelined him. The Chaparral would continue into the 1982 season - a full four years, before technology finally surpassed it and rendered it obsolete.
