Bobby Unser ended a two year winless streak in grand fashion. Driving the ground effects Penske PC7, it looked like he'd get his third Indy 500 victory, leading over 100 laps, including most of the second half of the race, but gear problems relegated him to fifth place. After Indy, Unser racked up 6 wins and finished second in the championship to team mate Rick Mears.
