Tom Sneva was back-to-back USAC Indy car champion in 1977 and 1978. His second championship was quite unique, however, in that despite starting from pole seven times, Sneva failed to win a race! This, along with his outspoken personality, drew the ire of team owner Roger Penske and Sneva was fired and without a ride for the 1979 season (except for Indy). Sneva got his revenge 5 years later when he passed Penske driver Al Unser with 10 laps to go to win the 1983 Indianapolis 500.

In qualifying for the 1978 Indy 500, Sneva set a track record of 203.620mph - a record that would last 4 years.
