Rick Mears came to the Penske Racing Team in 1978 as a relative unknown, but the racing world quickly took notice. As a part time driver filling in for Mario Andretti who was competing in F1, Mears put his #71 CAM2 Penske PC6 on the front row for the Indianapolis 500. He would then go on to win at Milwaukee, Atlanta, and Brands Hatch and finish 9th in the overall season points, despite sitting out seven races!
