Johnny Rutherford was at the peak of his Indianapolis success in the mid 70s. The 1974 winner was a favorite to repeat in 1975. Despite only leading a few laps during the race, Rutherford ran with the leaders all day. The race was shaping up to be a great three way battle between Bobby Unser, Johnny Rutherford and A. J. Foyt when the the race was ended at 174 laps due to a torrential downpour with Rutherford in second. Rutherford would come back and win in 1976, giving him 2 wins and a second place in three consecutive years, a feat equaled only by Al Unser (1970-72) and Helio Castroneves (2001-2003).
