Johnny Rutherford came to Indy in 1974 as a veteran with ten 500 starts behind him and little to show for it other than the pole position in 1973. Unable to qualify on the first day in 1974, Rutherford set the fastest time in qualifying, but started 25th. He quickly raced his way to the front to battle A.J. Foyt and then go on to win what would be his first of three Indianapolis 500s.
