Coming off the USAC Championship in 1973, McCluskey returned to the Lindsey Hopkins team for 1974. Bob Riley had designed a radical new car that would run without a rear wing. Effectively Riley had designed the first ground effects car, but the implementation was not successful and the ground effects 'tunnel' was replaced with a conventional rear wing. McCluskey started the 500 in 27th and finished 16th.
