This was the first Indy 500 victory for car owner Roger Penske. The race was dominated by team mate Gary Bettenhausen but a failing engine allowed Donohue to pass Bettanhausen and go on to win, but not without controversey. Jerry Grant thought he was leading by more than a lap when Donohue passed him - Grant thought Donohue was unlapping hinself, but in reality it was a pass for position. Grant then pitted for a tire, but pulled into his team mate Bobby Unser's pit. The crew momentarily hooked up Unser's fuel to Grants car, which resulted in a penalty that resulted in Grant not being scored for the rest of the race.

Donohue retired from racing in 1974, but decided to try Formula One in 1975 where he lost his life practicing for a race.
