Defending Indianapolis 500 winner Jim Rathmann returned to Indy in 1961 with a new gold paint scheme to commemorate the golden anniverasary of the Indianapolis 500. Rathmann lead early for six laps, but a few laps later, at lap 48 he dropped ouf of the race with magneto trouble, finishing 30th.
