1958 saw Jimmy Bryan take the checkered flag at Indy driving the same car that Sam Hanks won with the previous year. This is the only time the same car won the 500 two consecutive years with different drivers.
This race was marred by a massive pileup on the first lap triggered by Ed Elisian and Dick Rathmann. Fifteen cars were involved, 8 cars eliminated from the race and veteran Pat O'Connor was killed when his car flipped upside down.
