Paul Russo and his Novi powered Kurtis started the 1956 Indianapolis 500 in 8th position and charged the way to the lead by lap eleven. it appeared that nobody could keep pace with the determined Russo, but as it had been in the past, fate would end the Novi's chance for victory when Russo's car blew a tire in turn one and sent him crashing - uninjured - into the first turn wall.
