Although running the popular Offenhauser four-cylinder normally aspirated engine like most cars in the race, Wallards car conceded almost 30 inches in engine displacement to the other Offys. In spite of this, Wallard managed to qualify second and win the race. A broken shock during the race meant Wallard got quite a pounding and a weary Wallard sat up on the back of the seat of the car as he coasted into victory lane.

Four days later Wallard was seriously injured in a sprint car crash and suffered severe burns. He attempted a comeback, but the scarring from the burns left him unable to perspire and forced his retirement.

Like many cars in the 50’s and 60’s, the gold markings were translucent gold leaf over brushed aluminum bodywork. This revealed the brush patterns on the aluminum underneath and resulted in a scalloped textured effect on the markings. Our decals recreate this scalloped effect as can be seen in the picture above.
