Bill Holland has one of the best records ever at Indianapolis, with a record of 2nd, 2nd, 1st and 2nd in his first four starts. After his heartbreaking loss in his rookie year of 1947 when he finished second to his team mate Mauri Rose when Rose failed to head the EZ sign from team owner Lou Moore, Holland again finished second to Rose in 1948. 1949 saw what looked to be a replay of 1947 with Holland once again leading team mate Rose. Once again Lou Moore gives the drivers the EZ sign and once again Rose ignores it and guns for a record fourth win. This time fate intervenes and Rose's car breaks a magneto strap ending his day. Holland cruises to the win and Rose was promptly fired by Moore.
