Wilbur Shaw was the defending Indianapolis 500 champion and he returned driving for Mike Boyle with his 1939 winning Maserati. Shaw battled early with Rex Mays, and Mauri Rose and Ted Horne looked ready to challenge Shaw, but the yellow flag came out at lap 150 for rain, and the last 50 laps were run under caution, meaning no-one could advance their position. Shaw became the first person to win the 500 in consecutive years.
