It looked like 1930 winner Billy Arnold would continue where he left of the previous year. Leading from lap 7 through 161, he appeared to be en-route to an easy victory. But on lap 167 a broken axle sent him crashing in flames. His tire left the track and hit and killed eleven year old Wilbur Brink who was playing in his front yard across the street from the Speedway. Arnold and his mechanic Spider Matlock were injured and Louis Schneider cruised the remaining laps to victory.
