Ed Carpenter had his best career start in the 2010 Indianapoiis 500, starting eigth on the grid in a car prepared in a joint effort by Vision Racing and Panther Racing. During the race he ran in the top ten and appared to be moving up through the field when the caution came out just as he was due for a pit stop. Thanks to an outdated rule that calls for the pits to be closed when the yellow comes out, Ed had to come in when the pits were closed to get enough fuel until he could make a full pit stop. This archaic mandatory double pit stop screwed him and he ended up finishing 17th.
