Defending Indy 500 winners Rahal-Letterman Racing returned with Buddy Rice in 2005 as well as adding racing phenom Danica Patrick to their lineup. Rice was injured in a practice accident early in the month and had to sit out the race. Patrick quallified an impressive fifth on the grid. 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner Kenny Bräck was brought in to fill in for Rice and on the third day of qualifying set the fastest time of the month, but since he was a second day qualifier (the original pole day was rained out), he was relegated to the eigth row.
During the race, green flag pit stops ensued at lap 55. This shuffled Danica Patrick into the lead on lap 56 – this was the first time a woman ever lead at Indy. On lap 155 Danica spun under caution as they were about to restart. She came into the pits to replace the nose on her car, then came in four laps later for fuel and tires, the last car on the lead lap. After another caution when the leaders pitted for what should be the last time, Danica and Bryan Herta stayed out, Herta leading. Danica passed Bryan on the restart to lead at lap 17s. Forced to conserve fuel, Danica was passed by Dan Wheldon on lap 186, just as another caution came out. On the restart with ten laps to go, Danica passed Wheldon and led for the next three laps – just seven away from victory, but fuel concerns forced her to back off and she was passed by Wheldon, team mate Vitor Miera and Bryan Herta and she finished fourth in her debut at Indy.
