Target Chip Ganassi's victory in the 2000 Indianapolis 500 inspired other CART teams to return the the Indianapolis 500 in 2001, most notably Team Penske and Team Green. After a seventeen minute red flag for rain at lap 155, Castroneves held off a charge by Robby Buhl, who spun in pursuit of Castroneves a few laps later. Castroneves maintained pace ahead of team mate Gil DeFerran to become the second rookie winner in a row. Penske, Team Green and Target Chip Ganassi accounted for the top size positions in the race.
