After a disastrous 1980 Formula One season where Ferrari failed to win and finished a dismal tenth in the constructors championship, Ferrari abandoned it's now obsolete flat twelve-cylinder 312T engine in favor a more ground effect friendly turbo V6 engine. While the new 126CK was plagued with reliability issues, it was considerably faster than the 312T5 from the previous year and managed to score two wins in the hands of Gilles Villeneuve.
